Things to do in New Haven
Just a few blocks from Central Hotel you will discover New Haven’s bustling, historic Front Street district, which boasts the Walt Theatre, a fully restored Art Deco movie theater which offers first run movies and special screenings. There are interesting shops, including JFH Studio, Astral Glass Studio & Gallery, Boat Paddle Ukuleles and Front Street Artisans art gallery and antiques. Somebody’s Restaurant, with a diverse menu, is a favorite spot with both travelers and locals for a leisurely lunch or dinner and is also a great place to stop for homemade ice cream or a cold beer on a hot summer’s day.
The non-profit Riverfront Cultural Society is a restored 1872 mercantile featuring live music as well as yoga classes, a speakers series and a weekly Thursday Farmer’s Market offering artisan breads and other baked goods, jellies and jams, Grateful Grind Spice Guy hand crafted pasta and spice mixes, Beneficial Botanicals products, crafts and fresh fruits and vegetables in season from local growers. Dinner is also served with all proceeds benefiting RCS.
The newly constructed Levee Walk and riverfront park provids visitors the opportunity for a scenic stroll along the Missouri River and nearby is the site of the Coulter Memorial and Visitor’s Center as well as a busy boat ramp. Picnic in the park with a bottle of local wine or stop in the Bait & Tackle Store to find everything you need to fish from the river banks for one of the area’s legendary giant catfish.
Up the hill on Highway 100, find noted fashion designer Katie Kantley offering one of a kind, hand crafted silk clothing and scarves and custom designs, a 24 hour fitness facility which Central Hotel guests can use for a small fee, The Colony House restaurant (a favorite breakfast stop for locals), El Ranchito Mexican Restaurant and Buck’s Hilltop Lounge Bar & Grill. The new Seitter’s Market is the place to go for groceries and they also offer a full service cheese case and deli with fresh fried chicken, catfish, BBQ and deli sandwiches for winery picnics.
Local award winning wineries include Bias Vineyards and Microbrewery, Bommarito Estate Almond Tree Winery and Robller Vineyards. Each offers tasting rooms as well as special events throughout the year.
